The Work in Argentina
"The future is as bright as the promises of God." - William Carey
God has been actively working in the hearts of the Argentine people since long before churches of Christ in the United States began sending missionaries there. Even though God could choose to work in spite of us, He chooses to work through us as well. Let me tell you a bit about what God could do through me in Argentina.
There are seventeen congregatinos of churches of Christ and currently ten men working full-time with the Lord's church in Argentina. These men are from Argentina, Colombia, Chile and the United States. They are a great group of brothers who are dedicated to sharing the Good News in Argentina.
In Argentina I will be focusing on three main goals:
Buenos Aires - The Caballito Church of Christ
My home base will be the Caballito Church of Christ in downtown Argentina. I will become part of the missionary team there which include Osvaldo Valdéz, a native Argentine evangelist; Joel Thomas Banks, an American missionary who was worked off-and-on in Argentina since the 1970’s; Ruben Darío Lopera, a Colombian missionary who recently moved from Ecuador where he spent the last twenty years as a missionary and teacher at the Quito Bible Institute and Pedro Soto, a missionary from Chile who works mainly with the young people at the church. I will be focusing my efforts on local evangelism in Buenos Aires as well as training others for the work of evangelism.
The churches of Christ throughout Argentina
In addition to serving the church in Buenos Aires, I hope to also encourage and strengthen other congregations in Argentina through visits, teaching and evangelistic campaigns. There are a number of congregations throughout Argentina with approximately ten to twenty members. I hope not only to encourage them but to equip them to reach out to their communities and continue the ministry of Christ where they live.
IBICA - The Argentine Bible Institute
In an effort to equip workers, train new missionaries and plant new churches, the leaders of the Caballito congregation along with other leaders in Buenos Aires are working hard to form the Argentine Bible Institute, in Spanish known as IBICA, Instituto Bíblico de las Iglesias de Cristo en Argentina. Very soon students from Argentina and other nations in the Southern Cone of South America will come to Buenos Aires to study God's Word, language and culture in order to better prepare themselves for service in the Lord's church. We pray that the next generation of South American church planters will come from the Institute. Lord willing, I will help out with the administration of the school as well as teaching a few courses.
Here below is a map of the churches of Christ in Argentina. Though there are proportionally considering the large population of Argentina, it is clear that God is at work, touching lives and changing hearts.
